HypnoBirthing® FAQs:
The "No-Gatekeeping" Edition
1. Is this just "magical thinking" or is there actual science?
It’s mostly biology.
HypnoBirthing focuses on the autonomic nervous system (ANS). When you’re scared, your body produces adrenaline, which physically shunts blood away from your uterus, making labor longer and more painful. HypnoBirthing uses self-relaxation exercises to keep your oxytocin, the "labor hormone" high and your muscles loose. It’s hacking your brain to stay out of your body’s way.
2. What is “self-hypnosis” and how is it used in birth?
Self-hypnosis is a state of relaxation, not control.
It is not being asleep or under someone’s control; you are fully awake, aware, and able to come and go from this deeply relaxed state as needed. Instead of focusing on pain, self-hypnosis uses techniques to reframe sensations.
Using slow, rhythmic breathing, along with positive affirmations and visualizations to stay focused, you reduce the “Fear-Tension-Pain” cycle that normally puts the body in fight-or-flight mode, thereby reducing stress hormones and increasing helpful endorphins.
3. I’m planning on an Epidural. Is this class even for me?
100%!
HypnoBirthing isn't "unmedicated-or-bust." It’s about mindset and advocacy. The tools and techniques you will learn will help you stay calm during the prep, handle the sensations before the meds kick in, and communicate effectively with your medical team so you feel in control of the vibe in the room.
4. Do I have to sit in a circle and hum? (Asking for my social anxiety...)
No gatekeeping here: We know forced group-sharing can be unsettling for some.
Classes are structured like a workshop, not a support group. You’ll get a mix of visual presentations, hands-on practice with your partner, and digital resources you can use at home. You can participate as much or as little as you’re comfortable with.
5. My partner is... skeptical. How do I get them on board?
In HypnoBirthing, partners aren’t just there to hold your hand, they are the Lead Advocate.
They’ll receive a literal Playbook on how to manage the environment, talk to medical support staff, and use physical touch techniques to help you produce natural pain-relief hormones. It turns them from a spectator into a vital part of the birth team. For me, this is one of the many exciting aspects of the program. Partners who may not have felt as connected before, often report feeling a deeper connection with both the birthing mother and baby.
6. Is this inclusive? I don’t see myself in traditional "birthing" spaces.
We understand that the "Boho Goddess" aesthetic isn't for everyone.
Our curriculum is gender-neutral and inclusive of all family structures. We focus on the physiological process of birthing a human, period. No judgment on your life, your body, or your parenting style. We’re here to provide the tools; you decide how to use them.
